Per Capita Personal Income In 2002 Indiana had a per capita personal income of $28,032. This per capita personal income ranked 34th in the United States and was 91 percent of the national average, $30,906. The 2002 per capita personal income reflected an increase of 1.5 percent from 2001. The 2001-2002 national change was 1.2 percent. In 1992 the per capita personal income of Indiana was $19,037 and ranked 31st in the United States. The 1992-2002 average annual growth rate of per capita personal income was 3.9 percent. The average annual growth rate for the nation was 4.0 percent. Total Personal Income In 2002 Indiana had a total personal income of $172,591,842. This total personal income ranked 16th in the United States. In 1992 the total personal income of Indiana was $108,028,550 and ranked 16th in the United States. The 2002 total personal income reflected an increase of 2.0 percent from 2001. The 2001-2002 national change was 2.3 percent. The 1992-2002 average annual growth rate of total personal income was 4.8 percent. The average annual growth rate for the nation was 5.2 percent. Components of Personal Income Total personal income includes net earnings by place of residence; dividends, interest, and rent; and total personal current transfer receipts received by the residents of Indiana. In 2002 net earnings accounted for 68.5 percent of total personal income (compared with 68.7 in 1992); dividends, interest, and rent were 16.9 percent (compared with 17.2 in 1992); and personal current transfer receipts were 14.7 percent (compared with 14.1 in 1992). From 2001 to 2002 net earnings increased 1.4 percent; dividends, interest, and rent increased 0.4 percent; and personal current transfer receipts increased 7.1 percent. From 1992 to 2002 net earnings increased on average 4.8 percent each year; dividends, interest, and rent increased on average 4.6 percent; and personal current transfer receipts increased on average 5.2 percent. Employment Earnings Earnings of persons employed in Indiana increased from $127,165,794 in 2001 to $129,374,146 in 2002, an increase of 1.7 percent. The 2001-2002 national change was 1.5 percent. The average annual growth rate from the 1992 estimate of $81,678,913 to the 2002 estimate was 4.7 percent. The average annual growth rate for the nation was 5.3 percent. Area - Indiana ranks 38th among the states in size, with a total area of 94,328 sq km (36,420 sq mi), including 816 sq km (315 sq mi) of inland water and 609 sq km (235 sq mi) of Lake Michigan over which it has jurisdiction. Indiana is roughly rectangular in shape, and the state has a maximum dimension north to south of 459 km (285 mi) and a maximum east to west dimension of 285 km (177 mi). The state is bordered on the north by Lake Michigan and the state of Michigan, on the east by Ohio, and on the west by Illinois. The Ohio River separates Indiana from Kentucky on the southern border. Climate - Throughout the year, temperatures do not vary greatly from place to place but are generally a few degrees higher in southern Indiana than in
northern Indiana. Average July temperatures in all of the state are in the lower to mid 20° C (mid 70°s F) and range from 23° C (74° F) in the north to
more than 26° C (78° F) in the south. The average July temperature at Indianapolis is 24° C (75° F). In summer, daytime highs in Indiana often rise to the
upper 30°s C (lower 100°s F), and on occasion they may reach into the lower 40°s C (lower 110°s F). Average January temperatures range from -3° C (26° F)
in the north to more than 1° C (34° F) in the Ohio River valley. The average January temperature at Indianapolis is -2° C (28° F). In winter, freezing weather
occurs throughout the state, and lows in the lower -30°s C (lower -20°s F) are sometimes recorded in northern Indiana. Precipitation (rainfall and snowfall)
ranges from less than 860 mm (34 in) a year in the northwest to more than 1170 mm (46 in) in the hills of southern Indiana, near the Ohio River valley.
Precipitation is distributed throughout the year although in the north the heaviest rainfall comes between April and July. Hailstorms are common in the
north and occur occasionally in the south during summer and cause damage to crops. Tornados associated with frontal storms can occur, and occasionally do
considerable damage. In winter heavy snowfalls are common in the north and occur occasionally in the south.
