Capitol - Edmonton
Area - Alberta is the fourth largest province of Canada. It covers an area of 255,541 sq miles (661,848 sq km) which includes 7,541 sq miles (19,531 sq
km) of inland water. It is 699 miles (1,225 km) from north to south and varies in width from 184 miles (296 km) at the United States border to 406 miles
(653 km) at its widest point. Alberta can be divided into four major regions which are the Rocky Mountains and foothills, forming part of the larger Cordilleran
Region, Alberta Plain, Saskatchewan Plain, which with the Alberta Plain forms part of the larger Interior Plains region; and a small section of the Canadian
Shield.
Climate - In January, average daily temperatures range from about -14° C (about 6° F) at Grande Prairie to about -9° C (about 16° F) at Calgary. Temperatures
of -49° C (-57° F) have been recorded, though rarely, at Edmonton. The winters are mostly long and extremely cold. In July, average daily temperatures range
from about 16° C (about 60° F) along the northern boundary to about 21° C (about 70° F) in the south. In the extreme southeastern section of the province,
temperatures of 43° C (110° F) have been recorded. Except for the mountainous areas, summers throughout the province are warm.
